The UWA Hackett Scholarship is provided by The University of Western Australia to assist and encourage eligible Year 12 WACE school leavers with great potential, to commence and pursue a bachelor’s degree at the University. Eligible candidates will be automatically considered for the scholarship and do not need to submit an application.

| 3. Purpose: | To assist and encourage eligible Year 12 WACE school leavers with great potential, to commence and pursue a bachelor’s degree at the University. |
| 4. Number of scholarships: | The number of scholarships is determined by Coursework Scholarships and Prizes. |
| 5. Value: | The scholarship value is— (a) $5,000 per annum for recipients from regional and remote1 and specified outer-metropolitan2 schools residing at University Hall or another UWA affiliated residential college; (https://www.uwa.edu.au/study/student-life/accommodation/live-on-campus) (b) $1,500 per annum for regional and remote and outer metropolitan2 students residing out of residential college; or (c) $1,500 per annum for all other recipients. 1To be considered for a scholarship based on rural or regional status, students need to prove that they have lived in a rural or remote area. | 6. Duration of scholarship: | The duration of the scholarship is six semesters, plus an additional two semesters for honours if applicable. |
| 7. Concurrent scholarships: | The scholarship may be held concurrently with any other scholarship or award provided that this is permitted by the conditions of the concurrent scholarship or award, with the exception of the following—
(a) residential college accommodation scholarships for regional and remote students; and (b) the UWA Principal’s Citizenship Award. |
| 8. Eligibility requirements: | 1. To be eligible to be considered for the scholarship, a candidate must—
(a) be a domestic student;3 (b) have accepted an Early Offer to the University, or applied through the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC) for a place at the University, nominating a course at the University as their first preference in the first round of offers; (c) in the year of application for a place at the University, be enrolled— (i) in Year 12 at a secondary school in Western Australia; and (ii) in at least four Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) courses, or equivalent, which could reasonably be expected to lead to the calculation of an ATAR to satisfy the University’s entry requirements; and (d) be in the top 10 per cent of their school with an ATAR of at least 60; and- (i) have completed Year 12 at a targeted outer metropolitan area2; or (ii) have completed Year 12 at a regional or remote1 school; or (e) achieve an ATAR of at least 60; and— (i) be a UWA Fairway Student having successfully completed the UWA Fairway Program; or (ii) be an Australian Indigenous Person4.

| 8. Eligibility requirements: | 1. To be eligible to be considered for the scholarship, a candidate must—

| 9. Eligibility to take up: | 1. Subject to clause 17.2, the scholarship must be taken up in the semester for which it is awarded.
2. To be eligible to take up the scholarship, an awardee must— (a) be enrolled— (i) full-time unless the selection body is satisfied that there are exceptional circumstances6 which preclude full-time enrolment; and (ii) in an undergraduate degree course at the University. 6Exceptional circumstances include, but are not limited to, a medical condition or major family commitments. |
| 10. Selection criterion/criteria: | Academic achievement.7
7Academic achievement is determined by the applicant’s un-adjusted Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent ATAR as determined by the University. |
| 11. Selection process: | By the selection body, having regard to the applicants’ academic records. |
| 12. Method of payment: | 1. For regional or remote or outer metropolitan recipients residing in college, the scholarship is paid directly to the recipient’s residential college by the University on behalf of the recipient in two equal instalments each year on or after the academic census date in each semester.
2. Regional and remote and outer metropolitan recipients residing out of college, the scholarship is paid in two equal instalments each year on or after the academic census date in each semester. 3. For all other recipients, the scholarship is paid in two equal instalments each year on or after the academic census date in each semester. |
| 12. Method of payment: | 1. For regional or remote or outer metropolitan recipients residing in college, the scholarship is paid directly to the recipient’s residential college by the University on behalf of the recipient in two equal instalments each year on or after the academic census date in each semester.
2. Regional and remote and outer metropolitan recipients residing out of college, the scholarship is paid in two equal instalments each year on or after the academic census date in each semester. 3. For all other recipients, the scholarship is paid in two equal instalments each year on or after the academic census date in each semester. |
| 13. Criteria for continuation: | The recipient must—
(a) continue to meet the eligibility requirements in clause 9.2 of these conditions; (b) make satisfactory progress in accordance with the rules for the course for which the scholarship is awarded; and (c) confirm annually, in the manner and by the dates specified by the University, that they continue to meet the eligibility requirements of the scholarship. |
| 14. Suspension of scholarship: | The scholarship—
(a) may only be suspended after the first academic census date following the commencement of the scholarship; and (b) may be suspended for up to two semesters during the tenure of the scholarship subject to approval by the Coursework Scholarships Committee.8 8Students wishing to suspend their course must apply for a period of approved leave from the relevant faculty or board and notify the Manager, Coursework Scholarships and Prizes. |
| 15. Application procedure: | Eligible candidates are automatically considered for the scholarship and do not need to submit a separate application. |
| 16. Student opportunity: | Regional or remote awardees will be guaranteed a place at University Hall. |
| 17. Other conditions: | 1. The offer of the scholarship must be accepted by the date specified in the letter of offer.
2. Regional and remote students may defer the scholarship offer for up to two semesters. 3. An awardee shall be liable for any and all penalties, fees and charges relating to withdrawing from accommodation at a residential college prior to the census date relevant to the semester in which the withdrawal takes place. |
| 18. Publications: | Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of the UWA Hackett Scholarship must acknowledge the support of the scholarship and carry the University by-line. |
